This small fungi is where my passion for lichens and my love for mushrooms intersect. Lichenomphalia umbellifera, more commonly called “green pea mushroom lichen,” has been on my bucket list ever since I read about it in Stephen Sharnoff’s Field Guide to California Lichens. It has both a nonlichenized agaric fruitbodies and the lichenized thalli. In other words, the ‘mushroom’ fruits from lichen. It’s both a lichen and a mushroom!
I found this on a rotting log deep within the Middle Santiam Wilderness on Saturday, where no one could hear this fungi nerd’s yelp with glee upon seeing his life list lichen.
